FAQ's
Laser hair removal is used to permanently reduce/remove unwanted hair on every part of the body using Laser technology.
Laser Hair Removal works by sending the light of a laser through the pigment in the hair.
This light converts to heat, which damages the hair follicle and hair bulb without damaging the surrounding tissue.
After a number of sessions, hair becomes weak and eventually stops growing.
This treatment is perfect for anyone wanting to reduce and unwanted hair.
The treatment is especially effective for people that suffer with conditions similar to Folliculitis.
Folliculitis is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles become inflamed.
It’s often caused by an infection with bacteria.
At first it may look like small pimples around the tiny pockets from where each hair grows (hair follicles).
The condition can be itchy & sore making it quite hard to conceal in the summer months.
There are biological factors that could influence your results with laser hair removal. If you have a hormonal issue/imbalance (e.g. PCOS) and the hormones are not stable you will not have great results. Heredity can play a factor in the results as well. I do not recommend anyone with an untreated hormonal issue do laser hair removal.
The lighter the skin colour the better the results. Keep in mind the laser targets colour and the laser does not differentiate between colour in the hair or colour in the skin…it will target both. When there is colour on the skin the strength of the laser setting is limited.
The more colour in the skin the lower the energy which means less effective results.
Benefits of laser hair removal include:
Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a coin every second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.
Most people will have permanent hair loss after an average of six to twelve sessions.
A consultation is an absolute must for this treatment as it enables the technician to explain the process and skin type of the client to see if they are a good candidate for the treatment, this is something we offer free of charge.
When you are doing laser hair removal the only way to remove hair, on your treatment site, is to shave. You cannot remove the hair from the follicle. While you are doing laser hair removal if you are tweezing, waxing or threading your treatment site you will not have the best results. The laser needs to see a coloured hair in the hair follicle. If you are removing it (tweezing, waxing, threading) there is nothing there for the laser to see and that follicle will not be treated, hair will continue to grow.
You will feel a little prickling but it is not painful. It feels like an elastic band snapping on the skin.
4 to 6 weeks for all sites on the Face. (upper lip, chin, side burns, jawline etc.)
6 to 8 weeks for all sites on the body. This schedule is very important for good results with laser hair removal. When you are having a laser treatment, only a follicle in the growth cycle will be treated and disabled at the time of your treatment. So, that is only some of the hair on your treatment site. It will take 4-6 weeks (face) and 6-8 weeks (body) for hair that was not in the growth cycle to get into the growth cycle and the be ready to treat the next time.
You may have temporary redness for an hour or two afterwards, but it soon disappears.
Sometimes, there is “Peri follicular edema” (slight swelling around the pores) but this too is very temporary and soon disappears.
In New Zealand, the laser hair removal industry is unregulated. If you get treated for your laser hair removal with an unqualified technician your results may not be good.
Often, the inexperienced technicians will “under treat” you. They will set the laser at very low energy settings to prevent burning you but you will also not get a good result.
To do laser hair removal well, a laser hair removal technician needs to have worked on many different skin types and hair types. A qualified technician can recognise immediately the amount of colour in the skin, the amount of colour in hair, and the thickness of the hair. All three of those factors will determine the energy set on the laser machine. And it is the settings on the laser machine that will determine your results or lack thereof in the end.
